How Many Stats on a Good HUD?

On July 31, 2011, in Blog, by admin

I’ve seen some insanely detailed HUDs while doing research for this site. I have no idea how anyone can have 20+ stats on a HUD and still be efficient. The first obstacle here is the amount of available screen space for the HUD.

Heads up players have the luxury of much more screen real estate available to display stats and can pretty much fit anything they want on the table layout. Six max players need to start thinking about how to fit the stats they want on the screen without everything getting too cluttered. Full ring players, especially multi-tablers, really need to take this into consideration and trim down their HUDs so that everything fits in the allotted space.

What Stats to Use

This isn’t a question I can answer for you as there are so many variables. The short answer is that 6 max and full ring players should only include the stats that they regularly use. Don’t ever look at aggression factor? Take it off your HUD.

If you have a HUD that you feel could benefit from some weight loss, do this during your next session. Make a list of all of the stats that you have on your HUD. As you play make a hash mark next to the stat every time you use it. Don’t worry about VPIP and PFR, you’re certainly going to look at those stats frequently.

After a session take a look at your stat list. It might surprise you that you didn’t use a lot of your stats for the entire session. Dump the ones you never considered and just make sure they are on a pop up so you can access them if the need arises.

Make judgement calls on the stats that you used only a few times. If the benefit of keeping them on your HUD outweighs the benefit of a leaner HUD, leave them there, otherwise move them to the pop up.

If there were some stats that you had to refer to the pop ups during your session you may consider adding them to the HUD in place of some of the ones you never looked at. Just make sure it’s a stat you use frequently, the goal here is to keep your HUD simple.

Once you’ve trimmed off the unnecessary items you can go through and organize your HUD and panels for maximum efficiency. Put related stats together. Add some labels. Make sure any new stats you added are properly color coded.
